Niek and Johannes did a great job together by integrating single cell analysis using microfluidics and non-linear mixed effect modelling establishing a close relation between metabolism and signalling in yeast. A systems biology approach used in this work suggests steps contributing to the cell-to-cell variability, indicating a close link between the glucose uptake rate, which determines the glycolytic rate, and the activity of the Snf1/Mig1 system.
